I left the U.S. to live in Europe for a few months earlier this year. After visiting Catania, Sicily, and Ibiza, Spain, I have settled in Alcalá de Henares, a charming little city located 25 minutes or so outside of Madrid. I love it here! The history, the art, the theatre! Last weekend I went to the Corral de Comedias de Alcalá de Henares theatre to watch ‘Globe Story’. I purchased a balcony seat for 9 Euros. In Spain, and Europe in general, the arts are for everyone to enjoy. The U.S.A. can suck it with their ridiculous prices for movies and theatre.
The play was in Spanish, but luckily most of it was told through music, movement, and emotion. It was perfect for this American who does not speak Spanish. Though, I am learning after living here for what will be almost three months by the time I leave. The barista today told me my Spanish is sounding excellent. But I mean, how hard is it to order café con leche y pan? But I’ll take the compliment!
The theater was commissioned in 1601 and opened to the public in 1602. I cannot even adequately explain the feeling of walking into a building with that much history. I found it beautiful and inspiring. Families brought their well-behaved children, and men and women of all ages and backgrounds were in attendance. That is what I love about acting and storytelling in general; you do not need to speak the same language to enjoy and appreciate a story and the performances. The arts are a universal language.
